Ode to the Cat

I had cats on the brain today. A bit of an oddity for me, as it is most often horses that prance around in my mind’s eye. But today, as I was sitting in the dentist chair, reading about the evolutionary history and subsequent behavior of today’s domestic cat, I felt appreciation for the common house cat and gratitude for the joy that they bring into our lives. The following collection of photos is in honor of our felines – - the fastest acting, most effective blood pressure medication around (with the possible exception of Simon’s cat). This photographic ode to the cat is dedicated to my mother, the ultimate cat lady.

Nini and Frisco: All (Almost) Grown Up

I have had the privilege of knowing Frisco since day one and have been able to watch him grow into the striking and steadfast animal he is today. As Frisco is becoming more of an adult horse, Nini has been hard at work helping to prepare him for his future as a solid riding partner. Julie and Raven: Snow Day

As a photography nut (or nutty photographer?), I simply could not help myself on this particular December day. I was working around my ranch, minding my own business, when my eye caught Julie and her lovely, little mare, Raven, playing in the snow. I snuck up on them with my camera and was treated to quite the show!

A Boy and His Dog

The holidays were such a special time for me this year as my husband, Matt, and I enjoyed some wonderful time off together. A particular highlight for me was spending a day at the horse ranch playing in the snow with a few of our beloved animal companions: Bella the hound dog and our exuberant colts, Chinook and Frisco.

Morgan and Her Old Timer Crew

At 60 years young, this ambitious gal decided it was time to live out her dream of owning horses. The original plan was to set up on some bonafide Montana acreage and while this converted cowgirl never made it to big sky country, she certainly can show the Colorado horsefolk a thing or two. Whether riding through streams, loping across a big meadow or simply hanging around with her old-timer animal crew (Cody the Corgi at 12, Charlie at 19 and Tango boasting 32 years!), Morgan is right at home.

Feather and Elvis: The Ultimate Love Affair

I know, I know, you believe that you have the ultimate love affair with your horse — as do I. I’m not here to debunk or debate the depth of love between anyone and her horse, but what I can speak to is how evident Feather’s passion and commitment is to Elvis. She truly radiates with adoration for this horse! It was such a treat for me to step back and simply enjoy being in the presence of two beings that are as grateful for each other as Feather and her horse.

Diane and Binder: The Start of Something Great

Binder (who was my first horse) had just embarked on his journey with Diane as his new human partner at the time of this photo shoot. This particular collection of photos is dear to me as it served as the christening of Binder and Diane’s new relationship. What joy I felt for them as I captured the fluid partnership that passed between two beautiful beings. A wonderful day it was with a terrific woman and as good of a horse as they come! May you enjoy many happy trails together!
